The department of civil engineering came into existence along with the college in the year 2010. It has an intake of 60 students. The department is currently headed by Prof. B. M. Ramalinga Reddy who has have more than 28 years of teaching experience in reputed colleges. Under his guidance it has committed itself to the proclaimed pledge of producing quality Civil Engineering professionals by the virtue of its very competent faculty and state-of-the-art laboratories. Ever since the department came into being, it has dedicated itself towards the never ending quest for knowledge and contributing with vigour in the development of Karnataka.
The field of civil engineering has been growing very fast in the recent years and we have now realized the importance of infrastructure development. The department is committed to produce civil engineers which would usher India into a utopia of development. For the realization of this dream the students are prepared to perform, even in the most hostile environment.
The following laboratories are part of the Civil Engineering Department.
Basic Material Testing Lab
The lab is meant for testing of the basic building materials, assessing its property and analyzing whether it confirms to the standards given by BIS codes. The laboratory is equipped with sophisticated and expensive equipment's like Universal Testing Machine (UTM), Vicker's apparatus, Brinnel's Hardness Testing Machine, Sieve shaker etc.
This outdoor lab helps the students to get hands on feeling of what civil engineering is and how to handle practical problems on surveying and leveling a field- which is an important process to be conducted before the starting up of any major civil engineering project. The lab has precise equipment's like Theodolites, Dumpy levels, Prismatic Compass, Plane tables and Chains with all the accessories.
Applied Engineering Geology lab
This lab enables a student to understand the physical properties of numerous samples of minerals and rocks using various techniques.
Computer Aided Design laboratory is an important practical subject which the Civil engineering students have to learn in their fifth semester. This lab deals with the study of various distinctive features and tools used in AutoCAD and the uses of this software in Civil engineering is covered extensively. The students also learn a Structural Analysis software for analysing structures like trusses, beams etc. They will also learn how to use Microsoft Excel in solving various civil engineering problems.
Hydraulics and Hydraulic Machinery Laboratory
Fluid mechanics and Hydraulics with Hydraulic Machines are the two core theory subjects which a student of Civil engineering study for the 3rd and 4th semester. They will get the chance of practically analysing what they studied in the theory by studying the HHM lab in the 5th semester. This laboratory have many heavy, flow equipments like Pipe friction apparatus, Notch apparatus, Venturiflume, orifices and mouth pieces, Impact of jet on vane apparatus, pumps, turbines, air compressor and air blower. The fifth semester mechanical engineering students are also using the facilities of this lab for attending FM lab.
Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory
GTE Lab is there in the 6th semester of the curriculum. This lab consisits of several equipments for testing the various parameters of soil like CBR test, Direct Shear test, Vane Shear test, Unconfined compression test, Triaxial compression test, Consolidation test, Permeability test, Compaction test, Consistency limit tests etc. The study of the various properties of soil and its safe bearing capacity, is a prime requisite for designing a proper foundation for the construction of roads, buildings etc. Thus this lab help the students in understanding the concept of geotechnical engineering in detail.
